Reading, Preparations and South Africa

In less than three weeks, I head to Cape Town, South Africa for the Beyond Reconciliation Conference. There are have been lots of details travel-wise to work through as I will fly to Perth, Australia, spend overnight before continuing on to Johannesburg and then Cape Town. I will be staying with friends in Cape Town. The conference goes Wednesday through Sunday, Dec 2-7. There appear to be a lot of great seminars and I look forward to the interaction with scholars and practioners.

From Cape Town, I fly to London, where I will again taken an overnight to give my body a break in the journey.  I will meet friends in London for a day together. Ultimately I end up in Philadelphia for a few days before heading west to Idaho for time with my family. Naomi will meet me there, flying via Los Angeles.

After such a difficult past five months physically, I have a few anxieties about the trip. My stamina is still not near normal and my pain still elevated. So this will require faith and grit. I am looking forward to the experience and know that it will be very personally enriching.

I continue to do considerable reading on processual analysis, forgiveness process, community justice and reconciliation. My topic at the seminar is an interaction of these topics. Some of my reading: Forgiveness and Reconciliation: Religion, Public Policy and Conflict Transformation edited by Raymond G. Helmick and Rodney L. Petersen; Dimensions of Forgiveness: Psychological Research & Theological Perspectives edited by Everett L. Worthington Jr. and finally, Reshaping Change: A Processual Perspective  edited by Patrick Dawson.
